The system is actuated by a simple knob to switch between two-wheel and four-wheel drive modes (low and high ratios). Our test car came with 4×4, though we didn’t have a chance to test it in appropriate conditions. Consequently, ride quality is comfortable for all passengers, but not as much as to overshadow the formidable competition from other manufacturers. It feels like the entire vehicle is suspended on a thick slab of jelly. There’s generous pitch upon acceleration and braking, and enough body roll to keep your sporting intentions well in check, but not your lunch. Perhaps the biggest downside to the Safari Storme remains the suspension. A more linear powerplant would be appreciated. The turbo kick can be fun in some cars, but in the heavy Storme, it serves as an annoyance. There’s still a lot of turbo lag, so you have to be careful in rowing the 5-speed gearbox to keep up a rapid pace of progress. The 2015 model engine makes 150PS, 10 above the previous model, but it’s not something that you feel on a daily basis. If that’s your idea of fun, then the Storme is fun to drive. You can see the corners of the bonnet from the driver’s seat and you generally find yourself looking down at other motorists at traffic stops. The Safari Storme is very tall and gives you a commanding view of the road. The spartan steering-mounted buttons are easier to use than the previous model’s stalk-mounted controls.

Bluetooth is quick and easy to pair with your mobile device and there’s an AUX port if all else fails. There’s a USB port that can charge your phone and has iPod connectivity.

The screen is a small, monochrome LED unit that barely accommodates the name of the track playing off your phone, but it does the job.

The new entertainment system is much improved from the previous model, and compares well with many other vehicles on the road. Combined with the improved ergos for the driver, the Storme is a decent night time mile muncher. The new projector headlamps are very good and provide a powerful, wide swathe of illumination.

Across three drivers of varying horizontal and vertical dimensions, only slight adjustments to the steering angle were required for a comfortable command position.

It’s smaller than the outgoing model and feels quite natural to manipulate. The steering wheel is new, borrowed from the newer Bolt and Zest vehicles. Plastic quality may or may not be improved, but the textures and touch felt good. The interior on our test car was a dark fabric and combined with the black/silver dash, the interior felt simple and comfortable. The new one is not substantially different, but felt better ergonomically. I didn’t know where to rest my right arm, getting to the window switches was a contortion. It felt too tall and ergonomically weird. Perhaps it’s a matter of putting miles on the vehicle, but the previous Storme just felt like driving an elephant. You could call it business-like, if you felt charitable. This bland silver colour didn’t do our test car any favours. It’s hard to miss, of course, being as large and tall as it is. Otherwise, there’s just not enough new on the vehicle to catch the eye. If you’re a fan of the Safari lineage, then yes. We drove the 2.2l VariCOR diesel engine model, which also more or less behaved like the previous model. It is substantially the same as the outgoing model externally, with an improved interior. If you were one of the many wondering what benefits accrued to Tata Motors from their acquisition of Jaguar-Land Rover, perhaps you’ll see a tiny trickle-down effect in the grille, which along with the tweaked headlamps, recalls some Land Rover vehicles. The 2015 Tata Safari Storme is a facelift. The Safari Storme will still appeal to die-hards, but the sharks are certainly circling. As time has worn on, the market has changed dramatically, and even the plodders have learned to move quickly. In the early years (the vehicle has been available in its various iterations since 1998), its draw was obvious: indigenously produced, fresh-looking, relatively attractive price. The Tata Safari and its successor, the Storme, have built a substantial fan following. 2015 Tata Safari Storme VX 4x4 Introduction
